Which reality competition awards the winner a mirror-ball trophy?

The story behind the answer

'Dancing with the Stars' awards its winning celebrity-and-professional pair a mirror-ball trophy.

The US reality dance competition premiered on ABC in 2005. Each celebrity is partnered with a professional dancer, and the couples perform styles such as ballroom, Latin and contemporary dance. Judges award scores, while viewers also vote; the combined result determines which couples advance and which are eliminated.

The trophy’s reflective sphere gives the programme its most recognizable physical prize. The format was adapted from the British series 'Strictly Come Dancing', which premiered in 2004. Although both programmes use celebrity contestants and professional dance partners, their names, broadcasts and trophy traditions are distinct.

The show’s judging panel and hosts have changed over time. Tom Bergeron hosted the original US run, while later seasons featured Tyra Banks and then Alfonso Ribeiro as host. The mirror-ball trophy is sometimes described informally as a “mirror ball,” but it is specifically associated with the championship award presented at the US finale.
