Which real-world epic poem influenced J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional character Turin Turambar?

The story behind the answer

The Kalevala influenced J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional character Túrin Turambar.

The Kalevala is the Finnish national epic, compiled by Elias Lönnrot from traditional Finnish oral poetry. Tolkien studied Finnish and drew inspiration from its language and mythology while developing his own stories. Túrin’s tragic narrative is often discussed alongside the Kalevala character Kullervo, whose story includes family tragedy, violence, guilt, and a bleak fate.

Tolkien did not simply retell Kullervo’s story. Túrin belongs to the mythology of the First Age of Middle-earth and appears in several versions of Tolkien’s writings, including The Children of Húrin. The relationship is best understood as literary inspiration transformed into a new setting and narrative.

Readers sometimes identify other sources, such as the Volsunga saga or Oedipus, because Túrin shares broad tragic themes with them. However, Tolkien specifically connected the story’s origins with his engagement with the Kalevala.
