Citation was the first racehorse to earn more than $1 million in North American prize money, reaching the milestone during his 1950 racing career.
Bred and owned by Calumet Farm, Citation was trained by Horace A. “Jimmy” Jones and ridden by several jockeys, including Eddie Arcaro. He won the 1948 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, becoming the eighth American Triple Crown winner.
Citation also won the 1948 American Horse of the Year title. After a brief injury-related interruption, he returned in 1950 and became the first Thoroughbred to pass the million-dollar earnings mark in North America. His career record was 32 wins from 45 starts.
The prize-money milestone is often confused with later records because inflation and rapidly increasing purses changed racing economics. Horses such as Cigar and John Henry earned much larger nominal totals decades later, but Citation was the pioneer to cross the million-dollar threshold.
