Which horse won the 1973 Preakness Stakes after Secretariat’s record-breaking Kentucky Derby?

The story behind the answer

Secretariat won the 1973 Preakness Stakes, continuing his Triple Crown campaign after the Kentucky Derby.

At Pimlico Race Course on May 19, 1973, Secretariat won the Preakness by 2½ lengths over Sham. The race was run at 1 3/16 miles, and Secretariat’s official time was later revised to 1:53, a stakes record that still stands in the official record.

His Preakness victory followed a record-setting Kentucky Derby, which he won in 1:59.40. Secretariat then captured the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths, completing the first U.S. Triple Crown since Citation in 1948.

Sham was Secretariat’s principal rival in the first two Triple Crown races. Riva Ridge was Secretariat’s stablemate and had won the 1972 Kentucky Derby, but he was not the 1973 Preakness winner.
