Which racecourse hosts the annual Grand National steeplechase?
Answer
Aintree Racecourse
Answer
Aintree Racecourse
Aintree Racecourse hosts the annual Grand National steeplechase.
The Grand National is run at Aintree, near Liverpool in England. The first official running took place in 1839, when the race was known as the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase. It developed into one of the world’s best-known National Hunt races because of its long distance, large field and distinctive obstacles.
The modern race is run over about 4 miles 2½ furlongs, or approximately 6.9 kilometres. Its famous fences include Becher’s Brook, Valentine’s, Canal Turn and The Chair. The course has been modified over time to improve safety, including changes to fence profiles and landing areas.
Cheltenham is another major British jump-racing venue, but it hosts the Cheltenham Festival rather than the Grand National. Ascot is strongly associated with Royal Ascot and flat racing. Aintree is the specific venue that defines the Grand National.
