The Hateful Eight
Answer
The Hateful Eight
The Hateful Eight was the first Quentin Tarantino film shot entirely in the Ultra Panavision 70 format.
Tarantino and cinematographer Robert Richardson used the extremely wide format to photograph the film’s snowy Western landscapes and its isolated interior setting. The process produced a 2.76:1 aspect ratio, much wider than the standard widescreen ratios commonly used for modern theatrical films.
The production revived lenses and equipment associated with Ultra Panavision, a format that had been used for major Hollywood epics in the 1950s and 1960s. The Hateful Eight was also released in a special 70mm “roadshow” presentation, which included an intermission and an expanded version of some scenes.
The film’s broad outdoor compositions contrast with the increasingly tense action inside Minnie’s Haberdashery. The format is sometimes described simply as “70mm,” but Ultra Panavision 70 identifies the specific wide-gauge process used for the movie.
