Death Proof was Quentin Tarantino’s film in the 2007 double feature Grindhouse. Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror formed the other principal feature, while the presentation also included deliberately stylized fake trailers.
Death Proof stars Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike, a homicidal stunt performer who uses a specially reinforced car to target women. The film is divided into two connected sections, with a major shift in characters and location between them.
Grindhouse was designed as an affectionate recreation of exploitation-film double bills and their worn theatrical presentation. Its version of Death Proof included scratches, missing-reel effects, and other visual devices associated with damaged prints.
Outside the United States, Death Proof was generally distributed as a standalone film rather than as one half of the original Grindhouse theatrical package. That distribution history can cause confusion about whether the title describes a double feature or Tarantino’s individual movie.
