Which Queen song was inspired by Elvis Presley and written in 1979?

The story behind the answer

Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” was inspired by Elvis Presley and written by Freddie Mercury in 1979.

Mercury wrote the song in a Munich hotel while Queen were working on The Game. Its rock-and-roll style was a deliberate change from the band’s more elaborate progressive and theatrical arrangements. The recording used a comparatively direct structure, handclaps, and a prominent guitar sound associated with early rock and roll.

The single was released in the United Kingdom in December 1979 and in the United States in January 1980. It became Queen’s first US number-one single, remaining at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks. In Britain, it reached number two.

Mercury played rhythm guitar on the recording, despite generally being known as Queen’s pianist and lead singer. The song is sometimes misremembered as a Brian May composition, but its official writing credit belongs to Mercury alone.
