Which Queen member wrote the song “I Want to Break Free”?

The story behind the answer

John Deacon wrote Queen’s song “I Want to Break Free.”

Released in 1984, the song appeared on Queen’s album The Works. Deacon wrote it in a straightforward pop style, and the track became especially associated with its memorable music video, in which the band members appeared in humorous domestic costumes inspired by the British television soap opera Coronation Street.

The song was successful internationally, although its reception varied by market. In the United States, the video’s comedy concept was not shown by MTV at the time, which affected the song’s visibility there.

“I Want to Break Free” is sometimes attributed to Freddie Mercury because he sings the lead vocal, but songwriting credit belongs to Deacon. The song’s message and title also make it easy to confuse with other Queen songs about independence.
