Which Queen member played bass guitar? John Deacon. He was Queen’s bassist and the group’s youngest member, joining Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor in 1971 after auditioning at Imperial College London.

Deacon brought more than conventional bass playing to Queen. Trained in electrical engineering, he built the famous Deacy Amp from discarded electronic parts in 1972. Brian May used it to create many of Queen’s layered, orchestral guitar sounds.

He also wrote several of the band’s best-known songs, including “You’re My Best Friend,” “Another One Bites the Dust” and “I Want to Break Free.” A common mix-up is assuming the band’s other instrumentalists filled the bass role: May and Taylor occasionally played bass on recordings, but Deacon was Queen’s regular bassist.

After Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991, Deacon gradually withdrew from musical activity and retired in 1997. He remains associated with Queen but has declined to perform with later touring line-ups.
