Which punk band's 1977 debut single was 'One Chord Wonders'?

The story behind the answer

The punk band whose 1977 debut single was “One Chord Wonders” is the Adverts.

The Adverts were an English punk band formed in 1976 by vocalist and songwriter T. V. Smith and bassist Gaye Advert. After moving from Devon to London, they became part of the early Roxy Club scene, one of the key venues for emerging British punk. The Damned’s guitarist Brian James helped connect them with Stiff Records.

Stiff released “One Chord Wonders” on 29 April 1977. The title was deliberately self-deprecating: the band’s early live reputation centered on their limited musical technique, while Smith’s lyrics turned that limitation into a witty statement of punk attitude. The single was backed by “Quickstep.”

The Adverts are often more readily associated with “Gary Gilmore’s Eyes,” their controversial second single, which reached number 18 in the UK Singles Chart later in 1977. That success can obscure the fact that “One Chord Wonders” was their debut. Their first album, Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts, followed in 1978.
