Which punk band released the single 'Teenage Kicks' in 1978?

The story behind the answer

The punk band that released the single “Teenage Kicks” in 1978 was the Undertones.

The Undertones formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1976. Their music combined punk’s speed and directness with unusually melodic songwriting, and “Teenage Kicks” became their defining early song. Rhythm guitarist John O’Neill wrote it in the summer of 1977, before the band had a record deal.

The song was recorded in Belfast at Wizard Studios on 15 June 1978. It first appeared that September on the independent Good Vibrations label, run by Belfast record-store owner Terri Hooley. After Sire Records signed the band, the track was re-released as a standard single in October and reached number 31 on the UK Singles Chart.

BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel was crucial to its wider exposure. He first played the song on 25 September 1978 and played it twice in the same programme, an unusual gesture that helped make it a punk classic. Peel later called it his all-time favourite song.
