Which punk band released the single 'Pretty Vacant'?

The story behind the answer

The Sex Pistols released the single “Pretty Vacant.” It was issued in the United Kingdom on July 1, 1977, as the band’s third single and became one of their signature songs.

Written by guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook, bassist Glen Matlock, and vocalist John Lydon, “Pretty Vacant” combines a sharp, repetitive guitar riff with the band’s confrontational punk attitude. It was later included on the Sex Pistols’ only studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, released in 1977.

The song’s famous chorus was partly inspired by the New York Dolls’ “(I’m) Stranded,” whose title and repeated phrasing caught the attention of the Sex Pistols. Lydon’s exaggerated pronunciation of “vacant” also added to the track’s provocative reputation.

Listeners sometimes confuse “Pretty Vacant” with songs by The Clash or The Damned because all three groups were central to the first wave of British punk. However, this single belongs specifically to the Sex Pistols.
