Which punk band released the 2004 rock opera album 'American Idiot'?
Answer
Green Day
Answer
Green Day
The punk band that released the 2004 rock opera album American Idiot was Green Day. The album, Green Day’s seventh studio release, came out on September 21, 2004, through Reprise Records.
American Idiot is a concept album centered on Jesus of Suburbia, a fictional antihero representing a disaffected lower-middle-class American teenager. Its songs address political frustration, media influence, alienation, and the atmosphere surrounding the September 11 attacks and the Iraq War. Green Day described the ambitious project as a “punk rock opera.”
The album grew partly from a setback: the master tapes for an earlier planned project, Cigarettes and Valentines, were stolen. Rather than recreate that record, the band started over and developed longer connected pieces such as “Jesus of Suburbia” and “Homecoming.” Producer Rob Cavallo helped shape the recording, made between 2003 and 2004.
The album became Green Day’s first U.S. number-one album and produced major singles including “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Holiday,” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” It was later adapted into the stage musical American Idiot, which opened on Broadway in 2010.
