Which publisher first issued The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in Britain?

The story behind the answer

George Allen & Unwin first issued The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in Britain. The London publishing house released The Hobbit in 1937 and later published the three volumes of Tolkien’s major sequel.

The company’s chairman, Stanley Unwin, supported Tolkien after reading a favorable report from his young son Rayner, who worked for the firm. That recommendation helped The Hobbit move from manuscript to publication. Rayner Unwin later played an important role in the publication of The Lord of the Rings.

The Lord of the Rings appeared in Britain between 1954 and 1955: The Fellowship of the Ring in 1954, followed by The Two Towers and The Return of the King in 1955. The publisher’s decision to issue the work in parts helped make the long book manageable for production and sale.

George Allen & Unwin later became part of larger publishing groups. Its Tolkien association remains one of the most significant publisher-author relationships in modern fantasy literature.
