Which publisher began The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones in 1983?
Answer
Marvel Comics
Answer
Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics began The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones in 1983. The monthly series followed Marvel’s earlier comic adaptation of Raiders of the Lost Ark and became the first ongoing comic series devoted to original Indiana Jones adventures.
The series began in January 1983 and ran for 34 issues, concluding in 1986. Unlike a straightforward film adaptation, it created new pulp-style stories for the archaeologist, often sending him after supernatural relics and ancient mysteries. Supporting characters including Marcus Brody and Marion Ravenwood also appeared in the series.
Marvel’s Indiana Jones comics belonged to the licensing era surrounding the original films. Marvel had already published a three-issue Raiders of the Lost Ark adaptation in 1981, but The Further Adventures expanded the character’s world beyond the movie plot. Dark Horse later acquired the license and published Indiana Jones comics in the 1990s, which is why readers sometimes confuse the two publishers. IDW, Image, and DC were not the publisher that launched this 1983 series.
