Which production-based class replaced LMGTE Am at Le Mans in 2024? LMGT3 replaced LMGTE Am as the race’s production-based category.
LMGT3 uses regulations based on the global GT3 formula, which is built around modified production sports cars. The change was intended to reduce costs and make the class more accessible to manufacturers and private teams. Cars from brands such as Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Aston Martin and Lexus competed under the new rules.
LMGTE Am had been the amateur-oriented grand touring class, with driver line-ups required to include amateur-rated competitors. LMGT3 continued that pro-am character: teams had to include at least one Bronze-rated driver, plus another Bronze- or Silver-rated driver.
A common mix-up is confusing LMGT3 with Le Mans Hypercar or LMP2. Those are prototype categories, while LMGT3 represents the production-derived cars. LMP2 was absent from the full 2024 World Endurance Championship season but remained eligible for the Le Mans race itself.
