Which pope canonized Joan of Arc as a saint in 1920?

The story behind the answer

Pope Benedict XV canonized Joan of Arc in 1920.

Benedict XV formally declared Joan a saint on 16 May 1920 in a ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica. Her canonization followed the 1909 beatification authorized by Pope Pius X and a renewed examination of her life and reported miracles.

Joan’s reputation had changed dramatically since her execution. The retrial of 1456 annulled the original conviction, and later centuries turned her into a symbol of French national identity, religious devotion, and resistance. The Catholic Church’s canonization recognized her sanctity rather than endorsing every later political use of her image.

Benedict XV became pope in 1914 and served during the First World War. Joan is commemorated in the Roman Catholic Church on 30 May, the anniversary of her death. She is also one of France’s patron saints.
