Which Polish novelist won the 1924 Nobel Prize in Literature for his great national epic The Peasants?

The story behind the answer

Władysław Reymont won the 1924 Nobel Prize in Literature for his great national epic The Peasants.

Reymont was a Polish novelist whose four-volume novel The Peasants portrays village life across the cycle of the seasons. The work was published between 1904 and 1909 and is divided into sections associated with autumn, winter, spring, and summer.

The novel combines social observation with detailed descriptions of Polish customs, work, religious ceremonies, and conflicts over land. Its characters come from different generations and social positions within the village community.

Reymont is not the same writer as Henryk Sienkiewicz, who won Poland’s first literature Nobel in 1905. Reymont’s award came nearly two decades later and recognized a distinctly rural national panorama.
