Which Pokémon region debuted in Pokémon Gold and Silver?

The story behind the answer

Johto debuted as the new region in Pokémon Gold and Silver. It is the setting for the second-generation adventure and lies west of the earlier Kanto region.

Johto is inspired by the Kansai region of Japan, while Kanto draws on the real-world Kantō region. The two fictional regions were designed as neighboring areas, and Gold and Silver allow players to travel to Kanto after completing the main Johto storyline.

Important Johto locations include New Bark Town, Violet City, Ecruteak City, Goldenrod City, and the Pokémon League at the Indigo Plateau. The region also introduced landmarks such as the Bell Tower and the Burned Tower, which are linked to legendary Pokémon lore.

Johto is sometimes mistaken for Kanto because both regions appear in Gold and Silver. Kanto is the returning region from the first generation; Johto is the newly introduced one. The games also added 100 new Pokémon associated with the second generation.
