Which Pokémon is the signature Pokémon of the Champion Lance?

The story behind the answer

Dragonite is the signature Pokémon of the Champion Lance.

Lance is a Dragon-focused Trainer who leads the Elite Four in the original Kanto games and later serves as the Champion in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, and their remakes. Dragonite is his defining partner: Lance uses multiple Dragonite in several important battles, making the species more closely associated with him than Salamence, Gyarados, or Charizard.

Dragonite first appeared in Pokémon Red and Blue as the final evolution of Dratini. Dratini evolves into Dragonair and then Dragonite, a Dragon/Flying-type Pokémon known for its high stats and powerful moves. In the original games, Dragonite was also one of the few available Dragon-type species, which reinforced its connection with Lance.

The wording can cause confusion because Lance uses other Pokémon, including Gyarados and Aerodactyl, and his teams change between games. However, Dragonite remains his canonical signature Pokémon across the main series. In Pokémon Gold and Silver, Lance’s team famously includes three Dragonite.
