Which generation of Pokémon introduced the Paldea region?

The story behind the answer

The generation of Pokémon that introduced the Paldea region is Generation IX.

Generation IX began with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, released for Nintendo Switch on November 18, 2022. Their setting, Paldea, is a large region inspired primarily by Spain and the wider Iberian Peninsula. Unlike many earlier Pokémon adventures, Scarlet and Violet present Paldea as an open world with multiple story paths that can be tackled in flexible order.

The generation introduced new species such as the starter Pokémon Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, along with legendary Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon. It also introduced Terastallization, a battle mechanic that lets Pokémon take on a Tera Type and sometimes change their type during combat.

Paldea is not the same as Galar, the setting of Generation VIII’s Sword and Shield, or Alola, the setting of Generation VII’s Sun and Moon. The downloadable expansions broaden Generation IX’s world with Kitakami and Blueberry Academy, but the core games and generation remain centered on Paldea.
