When Ditto awakens in the Withered Wasteland, humans and most Pokémon have disappeared. Tangrowth is the only remaining resident described at the start of the story, living alone in the devastated landscape.

After meeting Ditto, Tangrowth helps establish the game’s mystery and restoration goal. The character later becomes known as Professor Tangrowth and explains that the world’s inhabitants vanished long ago, although Tangrowth does not know where they went. This gives Ditto a reason to rebuild habitats and attract Pokémon back to the area.

Tangrowth should not be confused with the many Pokémon that arrive later.
