Which Pokémon is number 151 in the original Kanto Pokédex?

The story behind the answer

Which Pokémon is number 151 in the original Kanto Pokédex? Mew is the answer.

Mew is listed as number 151 in the original Kanto Pokédex and at the end of the first generation’s 151-Pokémon sequence. It is a Psychic-type Mythical Pokémon associated with extraordinary rarity and the ability to learn the genetic moves of many other Pokémon.

Mew’s number can seem surprising because Mewtwo is encountered later in the story and its name suggests it was created from Mew. However, the Pokédex numbering places Mewtwo at #150 and Mew at #151. Mew was designed as a secret, event-related Pokémon rather than a normal early-game encounter.

In the original Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, Mew was not ordinarily obtainable through standard gameplay. Official distributions and later events made it available, while glitches and unofficial methods also became widely known. The number 151 therefore marks both the end of the original Kanto roster and one of Pokémon’s earliest mysteries.
