Which Pokémon is number 001 in the National Pokédex?

The story behind the answer

Bulbasaur is number 001 in the National Pokédex. It is the first Pokémon listed in the franchise-wide Pokédex and one of the three starter Pokémon offered at the beginning of Pokémon Red, Blue and their related versions.

Bulbasaur is a dual Grass- and Poison-type Pokémon. A distinctive plant bulb grows on its back from birth, and the bulb develops as Bulbasaur grows. The species can eventually evolve into Ivysaur and then Venusaur, forming the first evolutionary family in the National Pokédex.

The number 001 is not a ranking of strength or popularity. It is the opening position in the National Pokédex, the complete numbering system used to organize Pokémon across regions and generations. Regional Pokédexes may arrange Pokémon differently, which can cause confusion when comparing lists.

Bulbasaur is often mixed up with Pikachu because Pikachu is the franchise mascot, but Pikachu is National Pokédex number 025. Squirtle and Charmander are the other two original Kanto starters, listed later at numbers 007 and 004 respectively.
