Which Pokémon appears on the cover of Pokémon Gold version?

The story behind the answer

The Pokémon on the cover of Pokémon Gold version is Ho-Oh. Its colorful, phoenix-like design became the visual symbol of the Gold release, while Lugia served as the corresponding cover Pokémon for Pokémon Silver. Ho-Oh’s appearance on the packaging also connects directly to the game’s central Johto legends.

In the story, Ho-Oh is associated with the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City. Johto mythology says that Ho-Oh revived three Pokémon that died when the tower burned; they became the legendary beasts Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. This gives Ho-Oh a major cultural and narrative role beyond simply being a powerful legendary encounter.

Suicune and Celebi are also strongly associated with the Gold and Silver era, which can make them tempting answers. Suicune received a prominent role in Pokémon Crystal, and Celebi became the focus of later promotional material and special events. Ho-Oh, however, is the defining legendary displayed on Pokémon Gold’s original cover, and it later returned on the cover of Pokémon HeartGold.
