Which poet co-founded the Inklings literary group with C.S. Lewis at Oxford?
Answer
J.R.R. Tolkien
Answer
J.R.R. Tolkien
J.R.R. Tolkien was a founding member of the Inklings with C.S. Lewis at Oxford.
The Inklings were an informal literary discussion group associated with Oxford University. The group met mainly in the 1930s and 1940s, often at The Eagle and Child pub, known to members as the Bird and Baby, and in college rooms. Members read drafts of fiction, poetry, and scholarly work aloud and offered criticism.
Lewis and Tolkien shared an interest in myth, language, medieval literature, and Christianity. Their friendship influenced both men’s writing, although they did not agree on every literary or religious question. Tolkien was developing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, while Lewis was working on fiction, criticism, and Christian apologetics.
Charles Williams and Owen Barfield were also important Inklings. Dorothy L. Sayers, despite her association with Oxford literary circles, was not an original member of the Inklings. The group was informal rather than a formally chartered society, so membership changed over time.
