Which poet and writer became C.S. Lewis’s wife in 1956?
Answer
Joy Davidman
Answer
Joy Davidman
Joy Davidman became C.S. Lewis’s wife in 1956.
Davidman was an American poet and writer who had converted to Christianity before meeting Lewis. The two began corresponding, and their friendship developed into a close relationship. They entered into a civil marriage in Oxford in 1956, partly to secure her legal right to remain in the United Kingdom.
They later received a Christian marriage ceremony at Holy Trinity Church, Headington, in 1957. Their marriage was brief because Davidman died of cancer in 1960. Lewis’s grief and reflections on her death informed A Grief Observed, published under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk.
Davidman is sometimes confused with Lewis’s literary friends, including Dorothy L. Sayers, or with Edith Tolkien, the wife of J.R.R. Tolkien. Neither was Lewis’s wife. Joy Davidman was the American writer whose relationship with Lewis became one of the most important personal chapters of his later life.
