Which poem by J.R.R. Tolkien was published in The Oxford Magazine in 1934?

The story behind the answer

The poem by J.R.R. Tolkien published in The Oxford Magazine in 1934 was “The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.”

The poem appeared on 15 February 1934. It presents Tom Bombadil, the mysterious character who later appears in The Fellowship of the Ring, as he encounters Old Man Willow, the Barrow-wight, and Goldberry. Its playful rhythm and folklore-like imagery differ from the grand epic tone of much of Tolkien’s legendarium.

A collection titled The Adventures of Tom Bombadil was published in 1962. That book contains sixteen poems, including the 1934 poem, and several pieces connected with Middle-earth. Tolkien framed the poems as translations from the Red Book of Westmarch, extending the fictional history behind them.

The poem’s magazine appearance predates The Hobbit by three years. It is therefore an early published appearance of a character later known to readers through The Lord of the Rings, although the poem and the novel do not present exactly the same narrative context.
