Bess Wohl won the 2026 Tony Award for Best Play for Liberation.
Wohl wrote Liberation, which won Best Play at the 79th Tony Awards. The production competed against The Balusters, Giant, and Little Bear Ridge Road in the category for newly eligible plays.
The award recognized the playwriting itself, while other Tony categories honored performances, direction, and design. Liberation also received nominations for acting, directing, costume design, and other theatrical work, but its 2026 Tony win was specifically for Best Play.
Wohl is an American playwright and actor whose earlier stage works include Small Mouth Sounds and Grand Horizons. Liberation should not be confused with a revival category: it was treated as an original play in the 2025–26 Broadway season.
