Which PlayStation console was the first to support 4K resolution output?

The story behind the answer

The first PlayStation console to support 4K resolution output was the PlayStation 4 Pro.

Sony launched the PlayStation 4 Pro worldwide on November 10, 2016, as a higher-powered revision of the original PlayStation 4. Its upgraded AMD graphics processor and faster system components were designed to support 4K televisions, improved image quality, and better performance in compatible games.

The console could output 4K video for supported games and streaming services, although “4K gaming” did not always mean that every game was rendered natively at 3840×2160 pixels. Many titles used checkerboard rendering or other reconstruction techniques to produce a 4K-like image while balancing performance and cost. Games labeled “PS4 Pro Enhanced” included specific improvements for the hardware.

The original PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and later the PlayStation 5 should not replace this answer when asking which console introduced 4K output first. The PS5 arrived afterward and offers more extensive 4K support, while the base PS4 was primarily a 1080p machine. The PS4 Pro also streamed 4K video but did not include an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive.
