Which player is nicknamed The Great One?
Answer
Wayne Gretzky
Answer
Wayne Gretzky
Wayne Gretzky is nicknamed “The Great One.”
The Canadian centre earned the nickname through extraordinary scoring, playmaking, and hockey intelligence. Gretzky played 20 NHL seasons from 1979 to 1999 for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers. He remains the NHL’s career leader in points and assists.
Gretzky’s achievements made the nickname more than a marketing slogan. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP nine times, captured the Art Ross Trophy as scoring leader 10 times, and led Edmonton to four Stanley Cup championships. He is also the only NHL player to score more than 200 points in a season, accomplishing that feat four times.
The other choices are hockey legends but have different famous identities: Bobby Orr is renowned as an elite offensive defenseman, Gordie Howe is widely called “Mr. Hockey,” and Mario Lemieux was known as “The Magnificent One.” Gretzky’s number 99 was retired league-wide in 2000.
