Which player did the New York Islanders trade for Thomas Vanek in 2013?
Answer
Matt Moulson
Answer
Matt Moulson
The New York Islanders acquired Thomas Vanek from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Matt Moulson in October 2013. The trade also included a conditional 2014 first-round draft pick and a 2015 second-round pick, but Moulson was the player involved in the deal.
Vanek was an accomplished Austrian winger and one of the NHL’s leading goal scorers during his time in Buffalo. The Islanders hoped that adding him would strengthen a top line centred by John Tavares, with Kyle Okposo on the opposite wing. The trio produced strong offensive results during Vanek’s short Islanders tenure and became one of the league’s most dangerous lines.
The move proved temporary. Vanek declined a contract extension during the season, citing the Islanders’ planned move to Brooklyn among his concerns. New York traded him to the Montreal Canadiens on March 5, 2014, for prospect Sebastian Collberg and a conditional draft pick. Moulson, meanwhile, later returned to Buffalo after a brief stint with the Minnesota Wild.
