C.S. Lewis’s 1943 novel Perelandra is set on Venus.
Perelandra is the second book in Lewis’s Space Trilogy, following Out of the Silent Planet and preceding That Hideous Strength. Its protagonist, the philologist Elwin Ransom, travels to Venus, where he encounters a lush world covered largely by ocean and floating islands.
Lewis uses the older name Perelandra for the planet, while the novel’s setting corresponds to Venus in the solar system. The story explores temptation, obedience, free will, and the possibility of a different planetary history.
Readers sometimes confuse Perelandra with Mars because Mars is the destination in Out of the Silent Planet. The trilogy’s planetary names and invented terminology can also obscure the connection between its fictional worlds and the real planets associated with them.
