Which Oxford college elected C.S. Lewis to a fellowship in 1925?
Answer
Magdalen College
Answer
Magdalen College
Magdalen College elected C.S. Lewis to a fellowship in 1925.
Lewis had studied at University College, Oxford, and achieved a first-class degree in three subjects: Greek and Latin literature, Philosophy and Ancient History, and English. In 1925, Magdalen College appointed him as a Fellow and tutor in English.
He remained at Magdalen for nearly three decades. During this period, he taught students, published literary scholarship, and became an important figure in Oxford’s intellectual life. His rooms at the college also hosted meetings of the Inklings, an informal literary discussion group.
Lewis left Oxford for Cambridge in 1954, when he became the first holder of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Magdalen College, Oxford, and Magdalene College, Cambridge, are separate institutions with similarly pronounced names.
