Which planet is the destination in C.S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra?

The story behind the answer

Venus is the destination in C.S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra.

Perelandra, published in 1943, is the second novel in Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Its protagonist, Elwin Ransom, travels from Earth to the planet Perelandra, which is identified with Venus. There he encounters a newly created world and becomes involved in a conflict over its future.

The novel uses an imaginative version of Venus rather than a scientifically realistic account of the planet. Lewis depicts Perelandra as a world of floating islands and abundant life, very different from the hot, high-pressure Venus known through modern planetary science.

The first book in the trilogy, Out of the Silent Planet, is associated with Mars, while the third, That Hideous Strength, returns primarily to Earth. Those settings can make the trilogy’s planetary destinations easy to mix up.
