The Pixar short about a street musician and a little girl who challenges him is One Man Band.
The short follows two rival performers, Bass and Treble, competing in an Italian village square for the attention—and tip—of Tippy, a young girl carrying a gold coin. Their musical duel escalates as each musician tries to outplay the other with increasingly elaborate instruments.
Their rivalry causes Tippy to lose her coin down a drain. When the musicians cannot replace it, she takes one musician’s violin and the other’s cup and performs herself. Her unexpected talent earns her a large bag of coins, allowing her to get even with the two performers by teasing them with coins they cannot reach.
One Man Band was written and directed by Andrew Jimenez and Mark Andrews, with music by Michael Giacchino. It is almost entirely dialogue-free: musical performance and pantomime carry the story. The short debuted at Annecy in 1999 and was later shown with Cars, making it easy to confuse with other Pixar shorts from the same theatrical program.
