In the Pixar short 'BURN-E', what object does the robot attempt to replace?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s short film “BURN-E,” the robot attempts to replace a light bulb—the Axiom’s damaged running light, also called a spire.

The trouble begins when a tiny rock dislodged by WALL-E becomes a meteor and strikes one of the Axiom’s exterior lights. The ship’s computer activates BURN-E, whose full designation is Basic Utility Repair Nano Engineer, to perform the repair.

BURN-E repeatedly struggles with the replacement. He loses one spare light, accidentally cuts another in half, and finally installs the last replacement successfully. Before he can bring it online, WALL-E and EVE unintentionally lock him outside the ship.

A common mix-up is calling the part simply a light bulb when the film refers to the larger exterior unit as a “spire.” For a general trivia question, however, “light bulb” is the clear and fair answer. The 2008 short was created as a companion story to WALL-E and follows events happening alongside that feature film.
