Which pirate was born Edward Teach?
Answer
Blackbeard
Answer
Blackbeard
Blackbeard was born Edward Teach, also recorded in some sources as Edward Thatch.
Teach became one of the most recognizable pirate figures of the early eighteenth century. He first sailed with Benjamin Hornigold in the Bahamas before taking command of his own crew. His dramatic appearance, including a long black beard and burning fuses placed under his hat, helped him intimidate opponents without always needing a fight.
Blackbeard’s most famous vessel was Queen Anne’s Revenge, which he captured and refitted after taking the French ship La Concorde in 1717. The ship ran aground near Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina, in 1718, and its wreck was discovered in the twentieth century.
Lieutenant Robert Maynard killed Blackbeard during a battle at Ocracoke Island on 22 November 1718. Historical records use both Teach and Thatch, but Edward Teach is the standard answer in general-reference works.
