At which African cape was pirate Bartholomew Roberts killed in 1722?
Answer
Cape Lopez
Answer
Cape Lopez
Bartholomew Roberts was killed at Cape Lopez in 1722.
Cape Lopez is a headland on the Atlantic coast of present-day Gabon. In February 1722, the Royal Navy warship HMS Swallow attacked Roberts’s fleet there. Roberts was killed during the opening exchange, bringing the career of one of the Golden Age’s most successful pirates to an end.
Roberts had captured or plundered hundreds of vessels, mainly along the Americas and West Africa. His death was especially significant because it removed the leading pirate commander still operating openly after the authorities had intensified anti-piracy campaigns.
Cape Lopez is sometimes confused with Cape Verde, an island group farther north-west in the Atlantic. The battle itself occurred off the African mainland, near the modern Gabonese port area of Port-Gentil.
