Which pirate refused Woodes Rogers’s royal pardon and remained active in 1718?
Answer
Charles Vane
Answer
Charles Vane
Charles Vane refused Woodes Rogers’s royal pardon and remained active in 1718.
Charles Vane was one of the pirates operating from Nassau when Woodes Rogers arrived as governor of the Bahamas. Rogers carried a royal proclamation offering pardons to pirates who surrendered, but Vane rejected the offer rather than submit to colonial authority.
Vane escaped Nassau aboard a small vessel and continued pirating in the Caribbean. His defiance made him one of the most prominent opponents of Rogers’s attempt to restore British control over New Providence.
Vane’s career ended after a series of setbacks. He was marooned on an island and later recognized by a former associate, who reported him to authorities. Vane was tried and hanged at Gallows Point in Port Royal, Jamaica, in 1721.
