Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, used the ship Revenge after serving under Benjamin Hornigold.
Teach was active in the Bahamas and the Caribbean during the early eighteenth century. He sailed with Benjamin Hornigold before establishing his own reputation. After Hornigold accepted a royal pardon, Teach became an independent captain and commanded several vessels, including Revenge.
The name Revenge appeared on more than one pirate vessel, so it should not be confused with Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard’s most famous flagship. Blackbeard captured the French ship La Concorde in 1717 and renamed it Queen Anne’s Revenge, while Revenge was associated with an earlier stage of his career.
Teach built a frightening public image through his appearance and tactics, but his actual career lasted only a few years. Lieutenant Robert Maynard killed him in a battle near Ocracoke Island in November 1718. The distinction between Revenge and Queen Anne’s Revenge prevents a common ship-name mix-up.
