Which pirate captain was captured by the Royal Navy after the Battle of Cape Lopez in 1722?

The story behind the answer

Bartholomew Roberts was the pirate captain killed at the Battle of Cape Lopez in 1722.

Roberts, also known as Black Bart, operated across the Atlantic and along the coast of West Africa. In February 1722, he anchored at Cape Lopez in modern-day Gabon with much of his fleet, where the Royal Navy warship HMS Swallow attacked him.

Roberts stood on the deck of his flagship during the battle and was struck by grapeshot. His death caused the remaining pirates to surrender soon afterward, making the battle one of the most important Royal Navy victories against a major Golden Age pirate.

The event is distinct from Roberts’s earlier captures and from the later trials of his crew. His death effectively ended the most spectacular phase of his career, which had lasted only a few years but involved an exceptionally large number of captured vessels.
