Which Peruvian saint was the first person from the Americas to be canonized?
Answer
Rose of Lima
Answer
Rose of Lima
The Peruvian saint who was the first person from the Americas to be canonized was Rose of Lima.
Born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima in 1586, she joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic and became known for intense prayer, fasting, and charitable care for poor people. Her devotion was shaped by the religious culture of colonial Peru, where she lived her entire life.
Rose died in 1617 and was beatified in 1667. Pope Clement X canonized her on 12 April 1671, making her the first Catholic from the Americas to be formally declared a saint. The wording refers to someone born in the Americas, not merely someone who lived there.
She is the primary patron saint of Peru and is also associated with Latin America and the Philippines. Her feast is generally celebrated on 23 August, although Peru and some other countries observe it on 30 August. Martin de Porres, another famous Peruvian saint, was canonized much later, in 1962.
