James Lapine received a 2026 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre as a playwright and director.
Lapine was one of three recipients of the 2026 Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre honor, together with André Bishop and Jules Fisher. His career spans writing, directing, and designing for stage musicals and plays.
He is particularly associated with collaborations with composer Stephen Sondheim, including Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods. Lapine’s work helped define a sophisticated strand of American musical theatre that combines literary storytelling with ambitious musical structure.
Bernadette Peters presented Lapine’s lifetime-achievement award. Bishop was honored primarily for producing and artistic leadership, while Fisher was recognized for lighting design. Those distinctions make Lapine the correct answer when the question specifies a playwright and director.
