Which people created the written Tengwar script in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional history?

The story behind the answer

Fëanor created the written Tengwar script in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional history.

Tengwar, also called the Fëanorian characters, is a writing system used for several languages of Middle-earth. Tolkien’s history credits the Noldorin Elf Fëanor with devising it in the First Age. The script was designed to represent the sounds of speech systematically and was later adapted for languages including Quenya and Sindarin.

The letters can be written in different modes, so the same signs do not always represent identical sounds in every language. This flexibility is one reason the Tengwar often appears in inscriptions and decorative writing across Tolkien’s world. The inscription on the One Ring is written in Tengwar characters, although its language is the Black Speech of Mordor.

Fëanor is also the maker of the Silmarils, the jewels central to much of The Silmarillion. Elrond and Celebrimbor are associated with other important cultural and historical achievements, but neither is credited with inventing Tengwar.
