Which painting by Leonardo da Vinci hangs in Paris's Louvre Museum?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The portrait, also known as La Gioconda or La Joconde, is generally dated to the early sixteenth century. Leonardo used subtle transitions of light and shade, called sfumato, to model the sitter's face and create the painting's famously ambiguous expression. The identity of the sitter is traditionally associated with Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo.

Leonardo took the painting to France, where it entered the royal collection and later became part of the Louvre's holdings. It is painted in oil on a poplar panel and is much smaller than many visitors expect.

The work became even more famous after it was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 by Vincenzo Peruggia. It was recovered in Italy in 1913. The painting is now displayed behind protective glass and is among the museum's most visited works.
