Which Oxford pub hosted meetings of C.S. Lewis’s literary group, the Inklings?

The story behind the answer

The Eagle and Child hosted meetings of C.S. Lewis’s literary group, the Inklings. The Oxford pub was commonly nicknamed the Bird and Baby.

The Inklings were an informal discussion group rather than a formally organized society. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, and other writers and academics shared readings and conversation, often discussing works in progress. Their meetings were associated with Oxford during the 1930s and 1940s.

The pub is located on St Giles’ Street in central Oxford. The Inklings also met in Lewis’s rooms at Magdalen College and elsewhere, so the Eagle and Child was an important meeting place but not their only setting. It is sometimes confused with the Lamb and Flag, another historic Oxford pub across the street.
