Which Oxford group did J.R.R. Tolkien attend with C.S. Lewis?
Answer
The Inklings
Answer
The Inklings
J.R.R. Tolkien attended the Oxford literary group known as The Inklings with C.S. Lewis.
The Inklings were an informal discussion and reading group associated with Oxford University. Members and visitors read works in progress aloud, discussed literature, and debated questions about myth, religion, and storytelling.
Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were especially prominent members. Tolkien’s readings of parts of The Lord of the Rings took place within the intellectual and social circle surrounding the group, although The Inklings was never a formal society with a fixed membership list.
The Inklings should not be confused with the Bloomsbury Group, the Pre-Raphaelites, or The Apostles. Those were separate intellectual or artistic circles connected with different people and periods.
