Which Oxford discussion group included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis?
Answer
The Inklings
Answer
The Inklings
The Inklings was the Oxford discussion group that included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
The Inklings were an informal literary circle whose members met mainly in Oxford during the 1930s and 1940s. They read works in progress aloud, discussed literature, and debated ideas about myth, religion, language, and storytelling. Tolkien and Lewis became close friends, and their conversations influenced both writers.
Meetings were associated with Lewis’s rooms at Magdalen College and with the Eagle and Child pub, known to members as the Bird and Baby. Other participants included Charles Williams, Owen Barfield, and Warren Lewis, among others.
The Inklings were not a formally incorporated society with a fixed membership list. That informality distinguishes them from groups such as the Bloomsbury Group or the Fabian Society. Their importance comes from the creative exchange among writers rather than from an official publishing program or manifesto.
